Testing Information
Testing helps us track what your child is learning and which areas need extra practice to mastery. There are two types of tests administered in the fall, winter, and spring that help us monitor your child's progress in comparison to others at their grade level - NWEA and DIBELS/TRC. As the results become available, reports for these tests will be sent home in your child's data binder. Always feel free to contact the teacher if you have any questions or concerns about the tests. NWEA tests: Students take Reading and Math NWEA tests on the computer three times a year. Scores are tracked from kindergarten through fifth grade to indicate the progression of learning taking place. Compass Learning lessons on the computer are directly linked to your child's NWEA test results. You will see RIT scores under the Compass Learning folders that indicate how your child scored for each subtest. Encouraging your child to complete Reading and Math Compass Learning lessons at home will support and enhance the curriculum. Compass Learning provides a great e-learning opportunity on the weekends, during breaks, snow days, and summer vacation. There is no time to be bored. |
DIBELS tests:
NWF = Nonsense Word Fluency indicates how quickly your child can blend sounds. DORF = Daily Oral Reading Fluency Students read a series of fluency passages and retell what they have read. This assesses reading fluency and accuracy and indicates how many words per minute (WPM) your child can read. The retell portion is an indicator of the level of comprehension. TRC = Text Reading and Comprehension Students read a book and answer five oral questions after reading. The scores indicate accuracy of reading, comprehension, and level of difficulty of text. Books range from levels A through Z. Typical second grade students test at level L or M by the end of the school year. Click on the link above to see a copy of a student data card. This shows you the typical scores at the beginning, middle, and end of year in second grade.
