Reading Counts
Readers are leaders. Daily reading should become a habit, a way of life. Reading Counts is a reading incentive program to help build fluency, comprehension, stamina, and higher lexile levels. Students are eager to participate. We use the Reading Counts program for books we read in our Superkids reading book clubs as well as for independent reading of library books, class books, and books you may have at home. This is how it works. Students read books and take multiple choice quizzes on the computer to accumulate points. Students can read at home or school, but the quiz can only be accessed at school. Picture books are usually worth one or two points each, easier chapter books are usually worth two or three points. Your child should never be without a book. There are thousands of choices of Reading Counts books in the school library, but not every book has a Reading Counts quiz purchased. Students are also encouraged to borrow books from our classroom library where they will find a wide choice of selections from picture books to nonfiction texts to chapter books. PTO provides prizes for students who have reached certain goal levels. To attend the Reading Counts party at the end of the year students will need to have earned 200 points by early May. You can view your child's progress in Reading Counts on the monthly report located in your child's data binder. |
Scholastic Book Clubs
You can help inspire the love of reading by purchasing a book for your child's personal home library. A couple of times this year our class will send out Scholastic Book Club flyers with a due date. I will let you know via our class newsletter when we are taking class orders. There are two ways to order. 1.) Return your completed order form to school with a check made payable to Scholastic Reading Club. 2.) Place an on-line order using our classroom code and pay with a credit card. The advantage to on-line ordering is that there is a greater selection of books you may choose from in any flyer at any grade level. To place an on-line order and link it to my class, you will use the code to set up your account and make your credit card payment. After you follow this procedure, Scholastic will send me an e-mail to inform me of your book order. With either method you have used, your books will be sent to school in a couple of weeks from the due date. Click on the Scholastic Orders green button to place an order or click on the help link below for support or answers to your questions. scholasticbookclubhelp Our classroom on-line code: LWZW7
