Homework Tips
Please help your child find a quiet place to study at home away from television and other distractions. Your child should be reading nightly. Establish a set time this routine takes place. Many children enjoy reading just before bedtime. Remember to read and discuss books so your child is focusing on comprehension or understanding. Partner reading is an enjoyable alternative to share in the reading. At school students are responsible to write down their homework assignments daily in their spiral bound agenda or planner. You can expect homework on Mondays through Thursdays, typically Math, Spelling, and Reading. It is rare to not have any homework, so if your child frequently tells you there is no homework, please contact me. All written assignments need to be completed in pencil. Please buy plenty of pencils to supply your child for school and home. Math - Students will sometimes have an Everyday Math Home Link page to do or other skill work. We write the assignment in our planner. Math homework includes practicing Math facts on a consistent basis with the triangle fact cards, games, and websites. |
Spelling - Students will study a new list of words every five days. You should see a list of spelling words in your child's folder each week. Students also write the words in their planner each week. It is quite beneficial for an adult to give your child a practice spelling test to see which words are known and which need extra practice to become a part of your child's written vocabulary. Ideally your child will be able to apply the spelling skills in dictation and daily written work of any kind. See the Spelling Lists tab in our website for the word lists for each quarter of the school year. Reading - Reading should become a daily habit. Your child should read and have a quick book discussion every evening to build comprehension, fluency, and stamina. The goal is to read a minimum of 20 minutes each evening. Students are to choose a book from our class library to read for homework. The Reading Counts books then should be tested at school. |
